Garjiya Devi Temple is a highly revered Hindu pilgrimage site uniquely situated on a massive rock in the middle of the Kosi River, near Ramnagar, Uttarakhand. It serves as a sacred Shakti Peeth dedicated to Goddess Garjiya (an incarnation of Goddess Parvati). Located on the outskirts of the famous Jim Corbett National Park, it is a popular spiritual detour for wildlife tourists and devotees alike

Nainital

Nainital is a popular Himalayan resort town in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India, renowned as the "Lake District" of the country. Situated at an elevation of roughly 2,000 metres, this picturesque destination is built around a crescent-shaped mountain lake and offers a perfect retreat for families, couples, and nature lovers. Key Attractions to Explore : Naini Lake & Mall Road : Activity: Take a relaxing 30-minute boat ride on the reflective freshwater lake. Highlights: Stroll along the adjacent Mall Road for shopping, local street food, and vibrant lakeside views. Shree Maa Naina Devi Temple Significance: Located on the northern shore of the lake, this sacred Hindu temple is recognized as one of the 51 holy Shakti Peeth Snow View Point: Access: Easily reachable via an exhilarating aerial ropeway / cable car ride. Views: Provides panoramic, breathtaking vistas over the town and snow-capped Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo: Unique Features: Home to rare high-altitude wildlife, including the red panda, Siberian tiger, and exotic white peacocks. Best Time to Visit : Peak Season: March to June offers pleasant weather ranging between 21°C and 30°C, making it ideal for sightseeing and boating. Autumn Magic: October is highly recommended for clear, crisp mountain views before winter sets in. Winter Chill: Late December to January brings extreme cold, with occasional light snowfall hitting the town and surrounding areas.

Gurney House, Nainital

Corbett's primary summer residence, Gurney House is where he spent much of his life in Nainital — and the place he left from when he sailed for Kenya in 1947, never to return. Now a private property functioning as a small heritage museum, it houses his original furniture, books, and trophies. Visits require a prior appointment. Corbett wrote fondly of the surrounding oak forests, and childhood in these hills shaped his extraordinary connection with the natural world.

Kaladhungi & Corbett Museum

Corbett's actual winter bungalow, fully restored as a museum open to the public. Personal letters, hunting maps, original furniture, vintage photographs, and equipment are all on display. Nearby, Choti Haldwani is the model village Corbett built — he purchased the land, built a stone wall to protect crops from wild boar, and paid villagers' taxes. When he left India in 1947, he gifted the entire village to them. A guided heritage walk here, past the wall and to the house of his companion Moti Singh, is quietly moving.

Mukteshwar

Today Mukteshwar is a serene orchard hill station with sweeping views including Nanda Devi. In the late 1920s it was gripped by terror. The Mukteshwar Tigress began killing humans after porcupine quills prevented her from hunting normal prey. She killed 24 people targeting staff at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI). Corbett shot her in 1929. You can walk the IVRI campus, visit the Methodist Church where he camped, hike to Badri's Apple Orchard where she made her final kills, and stand at Chauli Ki Jali — the dramatic cliffside through which Corbett tracked her pugmarks.

Champawat

The ancient capital of Kumaon and the site of Corbett's most consequential hunt. The Champawat Tigress had killed an estimated 436 people across Nepal and India — the highest recorded toll of any wild animal in history. Corbett arrived in 1907. With the local Tehsildar and 300 villagers staging a massive beat, he tracked her to a river gorge. A marker stone near the Champawat tea gardens still traces his steps. This hunt marked the beginning of a life devoted to protecting both villagers and the animals that threatened them.

Mohan Village

A small village on the Kosi River, on the Ramnagar–Ranikhet road. The Mohan Man-Eater terrorised cart-trackers and villagers along the valley; Corbett's pursuit involved a gruelling chase through vertical thickets before tracking it into a boulder-strewn ravine. The Kath Ki Nao ridge above is where he spent sleepless nights. Today Mohan sits within a critical wildlife corridor for elephants and tigers, and is a fine spot for angling and quiet river walks.

Kala Agar & Chowgarh

Deep in the oak and rhododendron forests of eastern Kumaon. The Chowgarh Tigers — a mother-and-cub pair — were responsible for over 64 deaths. Corbett spent months here in a point-blank encounter he described as among the most dangerous of his life. The Kala Agar Forest Rest House, where he based himself, still stands — a colonial-era structure frozen in time. Village elders in Chowgarh still pass down oral histories of the Gora Sadhu (the White Sadhu) who walked these forests and saved their ancestors.
